Acquired Brain Injury Academic Rehabilitation Program
Assessment
A comprehensive academic assessment is typically the cornerstone of our involvement when providing academic rehabilitation services for students with ABI. This assessment outlines clearly how a student with ABI is likely to cope with specific demands of the school curriculum, and how instructional intervention can facilitate coping with these demands. Assessment measures include norm-referenced tests, which give information about how much the child knows compared to other children; criterion-referenced tests, which give detailed information about what the child knows; and trial teaching, which helps shape a recommendations for academic remediation. Our academic assessment reports make concrete programming recommendations for addressing skill weaknesses in the classroom and through individualized instruction. Our assessments typically include the following:
-
Review of previous assessments, hospital and school records, and other documents
-
Administration of a comprehensive assessment of core academic skills (reading decoding, reading comprehension, mathematics calculation, mathematics application and problem-solving, spelling, and written language).
-
Classroom observation, and consultation with school personnel
-
Preparation of a detailed, written report of assessment findings, and a treatment plan
Re-assessment

They measure the effectiveness of intervention and probe for any latent manifestations of difficulties attributable to the injury. Reassessments include the following:
