Dynamic Implementation

Coordinating the implementation of Academic Rehabilitation

An initial academic rehabilitation plan is predicated on the basis of an educational assessment. As part of an educational assessment we review and interpret the relevant findings of neuropsychological reports and we measure skill development in core academic areas. A student’s academic skills and neuropsychological profile are analyzed and used to inform the initial course of academic rehabilitation.

Academic rehabilitation plans should be revised on an ongoing basis and instruction should be modified to ensure that it adjusts to changing circumstances, and that it addresses the individual learning style and response to instruction of students with ABI. Students with ABI respond to instruction in ways that can not be fully predicted through testing alone. Systematic teaching routinely points to additional skills that need to be addressed explicitly through instruction.

For cases where we are the sole provider of academic rehabilitation services, case managers review teaching-progress data and consult with our teachers to monitor the instructional programming for students with ABI on an ongoing basis. We have available a wealth of educational resources and we implement changes to the instructional plan promptly when needed.

Often, there are geographical impediments to providing specialized services for students with ABI. Students who reside in remote communities are hard to reach; appropriate service providers in their area are often far and few between. Although teachers can be trained to administer specialized programming, the course of this programming as well as questions relating to its implementation need to be addressed by education specialists. A team approach is often the only way to provide academic rehabilitation; the effective coordination of the team and the programs that it implements is paramount to efficient, effective and comprehensive rehabilitation.
