Acquired Brain Injury Academic Rehabilitation Program

Instructional Intervention

Systematic intervention aimed at facilitating the academic achievement of students with Acquired Briain Injuries is typically recommended in academic assessments. The intervention, however, can take on many forms and can vary greatly in intensity and duration. Instructional intervention may occur at school or within an individualized setting. Instructional intervention may take the form of coordinating and coaching other members of the rehabilitation team, such as educational assistants or homework tutors, to reach the prescribed goal of academic rehabilitation.

Our staff is trained to deliver systematic individualized instruction aimed at building core academic skills, organizational skills, and at the remediation of executive function difficulties in students with ABI. We can work closely with educational assistants, classroom and resource teachers to accommodate the special needs of students with ABI in the classroom.

Consultation

Consultation is crucial to all steps of academic rehabilitation. The consultation process, whether in the form of a meeting, telephone conversation, video conference or school visit, results in concrete advice regarding the implementation of rehabilitation services. Consultations are formal discussions and differ in scope and nature from more general exchanges of information and ideas relating to a particular case.

Training

Training of individuals to implement specific programs comprised in the rehabilitation plan is often necessary due to the remote location of many of the ABI students that we service. We have successfully trained hundreds of teachers in public schools, private schools, and private practice to deliver systematic instruction for children with learning difficulties. We design instructional workshops specifically for teachers of children with ABI, and we can tailor instruction to address the needs of specific cases. However, we strongly advise that individuals who receive training to administer instruction on a case basis be supervised through our Teacher Monitoring service while they administer the specialized programs.
