One-on-One Teaching and Direct Instruction

One-on-One Teaching

One-on-one teaching is an exceptionally effective approach to instruction and most students, educators, and parents would agree that the ideal academic environment consists of one-on-one teaching, customized to the needs of the student. This type of individual attention allows for a high level of quality interaction between the teacher and the student.

The student benefits immensely from the personal attention inherent in a one-on-one teaching ratio. Because of the intimate environment, the teacher can accurately monitor how well the child is mastering the lessons, and can adapt the pace and targeting of skills accordingly. Children and teens have less fear of making mistakes when taken out of a group situation, and flourish in a safe learning environment.

Direct Instruction with One-On-One Teaching

All of our academic programs are carefully selected, based on a single criterion: success. Primarily, though not exclusively, Angus Lloyd Associates Inc. uses the Direct Instruction programs published by SRA/McGraw-Hill, a top provider of research-based educational programs. Direct Instruction is backed by more than 35 years of research, showing its effectiveness in improving basic skills. Sometimes called mastery learning, the pupil must master each lesson before moving forward, ensuring lesson retention. This proves to be exceptionally powerful in a one-on-one environment.

We invite you to read some of the many Direct Instruction success stories found on the SRA website.

Direct Instruction allows the Angus Lloyd Associates Inc. teacher to:

With Direct Instruction, the child or young adult masters and retains each new desired skill and, perhaps more importantly, understands that they have mastered these skills. It is this realization that helps boost self-esteem and self-confidence in young learners. The pupil develops independent and critical thinking skills that not only prepare the student for school, but for life.

On-Going Progress Monitoring

We constantly monitor the student's progress to ensure the success of the lesson plans. Every month parents receive an interim progress report, prepared by your child's teacher, detailing your child's progress. There is also an ongoing dialogue between the teachers, parents, and our senior consultants. In addition to this, our senior consultant is constantly monitoring progress through mastery tests and checkouts built into the programs.

After a year of instruction, or approximately 80 sessions, we complete a follow-up assessment. There is no extra charge for the writing of the reassessment report. Although we use similar assessment methods to the original assessment, the testing is different enough to prevent "practice effect." This allows us to see the exact progress made, and to make changes to programming if necessary.

About Our Teachers

Angus Lloyd Associates Inc. employs highly trained professionals. We employ only those with extensive experience working children with diverse learning needs to teach our programs. All of our educators are trained in the Direct Instruction method. In addition, there is always an M. Ed. on site who is available for consultation with the teachers. Teaching is diagnostic and dynamic, to ensure that your child gets the most out of each session. In order to achieve your child's academic remediation goals, we recommend a minimum of two one-hour sessions per week.
